Stripe Connect

Kuvert uses Stripe Connect with direct charges. That means the buyer's money goes into your own Stripe account, and Kuvert only deducts its fee from each individual transaction.

Why it is set up this way

There are two ways to build a gift card platform. One lets the platform receive the money and pay out to the business. The other lets payment go straight to the business and only deducts a fee. Kuvert does the latter.

  • You do not wait for a monthly payout from us — there is no payout from us.
  • If Kuvert goes down tomorrow, your money is still on your own Stripe account.
  • Because the money never passes through Kuvert, selling gift cards does not trigger an e-money licence requirement for us.

How to connect

  1. 01Open Overview in the dashboard — it is the first page you land on.
  2. 02Choose to connect Stripe. You are sent to Stripe.
  3. 03Log in to an existing account, or create a new one along the way.
  4. 04Fill in Stripe's verification and submit it.
  5. 05You are sent back to Kuvert, where the status updates.

What Stripe asks for

The verification is Stripe's, not Kuvert's. Have the following ready, so it usually takes just a few minutes:

  • CVR number and the registered business address.
  • Information about owners and authorised signatories.
  • Bank account for payout.
  • Identification for the person creating the account.

MobilePay

MobilePay is a capability on your Stripe account that must be activated. If it is not yet, customers can pay by card in the meantime. We fetch the capability status from Stripe, so the dashboard shows what is actually switched on.

Refunds

If you refund an order from the dashboard, the money goes back through Stripe from the account the payment landed on. Unredeemed cards on the order are cancelled at the same time.

The buyer gets word when Stripe has confirmed that the money is on its way — with the amount, the order number, and the fact that it typically takes 5–10 business days before it lands in the account. The mail is sent when the money is actually sent back, not when you press the button, and it's the same no matter how the order was refunded.

If the card was sent to someone other than the buyer, the recipient gets their own message saying the card is no longer usable — or that the amount has been reduced if only part of the purchase is being paid back. It mentions neither the buyer nor the amount sent back; it says what's on the card now and refers to you. Without it the recipient would only notice at the counter, with an email from you in hand stating an amount the card no longer has.
