Feature

The till is the phone you already have in your pocket.

A digital gift card has to be redeemed somewhere a queue stands. The redemption screen makes it one action: hold the code in front of the camera, or type it, and deduct the amount. The same screen takes both gift cards and tickets — the code says what it is.

01

How it works

Three steps

  1. 01

    Open redemption on the phone

It's in the dashboard and runs in the browser on the phone or tablet you have at the till. There's no app to install and no terminal to order.

  2. 02

Scan the code — or type it

Hold the customer's QR code in front of the camera. If the screen is scratched, wet or completely dead, you type the code in the field that's always visible. Both ways end the same place.

  3. 03

Deduct the amount, or let the guest in

If it's a gift card, you type the amount and redeem — in full or in part. If it's a ticket, check-in is decided on the spot: either it's valid, or it's been used before.

What are you holding up to the camera?

The terminal reads the code and shows the balance. This is the normal day.

What to know

One screen for both gift cards and tickets
Staff don't need to know in advance what they're holding the camera up to. The code's prefix decides the rest: a gift card has a balance to deduct from, a ticket must be let in or refused.
Partial redemption is the norm, not an exception
A card worth 1,000 kr. and a bill of 640 kr. leaves 360 kr. on the card. The amount is typed in each time, and never deducted automatically — only the person at the till knows what the guest is actually paying for.
The camera handles it without extra equipment
If the browser can read QR codes on its own, we use the built-in reader. If it can't, we fetch a reader from our own domain. No third party learns what you scan, and there's nothing to install to get started.
2.5 seconds' lock-out after each scan
A camera reads the same code many times a second. Without a lock-out, one card held in front of the lens would trigger a stream of redemptions, so the same code is ignored for 2.5 seconds after a successful scan. A different code always goes through straight away — two guests in the queue mustn't cost one of them.
Staff can redeem, but not change prices
The «staff» role has access to redemption and check-in and nothing else. Products, prices and the overall accounts figures belong to the owner.
Each transaction carries its name
The redemption is written to the card's history under the name of the staff member who made it. The period statement can therefore be shown per staff member, with no one needing to keep a separate list.
A wrong redemption can be reversed
Deducted 400 kr. instead of 40? There's a button right below, and the amount goes straight back on the card. It happens as a new transaction pointing to the one it reverses — the card's history shows both the error and the correction, and the balance can still be worked out from the transactions alone.
The card in the customer's wallet puts itself right
If the customer has saved the card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, the new balance is on their phone shortly after you've deducted the amount — even if the customer never opens the email or the card page again. It works the other way too: if you reverse a redemption, the amount comes back on the card in their pocket.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do we need to buy a scanner?

No. The camera in the phone or tablet you already have reads the code. There's no terminal to order and no equipment to commit to.

Does the card in the customer's wallet show the right balance?

Yes. When you deduct an amount, the card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet updates itself, so the customer doesn't walk around with a number that was right yesterday. The customer doesn't need to open the card or save it again.

What if the customer can't show their QR code?

Then you type the code. It's in the email the card was sent with, and it's put together to be read aloud across a desk: there's no zero, one, capital O or capital I in it.

Can the same card be redeemed more than once?

Yes, as long as there's a balance left. Each redemption is its own transaction, and the balance is worked out from the whole history rather than being stored in a field.

What happens if a ticket is scanned twice?

A second scan reports that the ticket's already been used, and no one is let in on it again. That's why it's harmless to scan an extra time for safety's sake.

Does redemption work without internet?

No. The balance is looked up with us, and that needs a connection. The screen says so plainly instead of looking as if the amount was deducted.

What do we do if we deduct the wrong amount?

You reverse it. The button is on the screen straight after redemption, and the amount is put back on the card straight away — even if the card's just been used up. Nothing gets deleted: the reversal is its own transaction, so a bookkeeper can see what happened.

Can we redeem without scanning anything?

Yes. The field for typing the code isn't a workaround, but an equal path in — it's also what a code reader with a keyboard types into.
