A digital gift card in Kuvert is an amount, a greeting and a code. The buyer chooses the amount on your own page, writes who the card is to and from, and pays. A moment later the gift card is in the recipient's inbox with your shop on it, or on the day the buyer chose. No cardboard, no stock and no cards lost in a drawer before anyone gets round to using them.

Three steps

The buyer chooses the amount
You decide what can be bought: an open amount within a range you set yourself, or fixed cards for one particular thing. The smallest amount a gift card can be sold for is DKK 100.00.

The buyer writes who it is for
To, from and a greeting, and a picture from your own gallery if you have uploaded any. It is the step that turns the purchase into a gift rather than a transfer.

The card arrives by email
The recipient has the gift card straight away, or on the date the buyer chose. One tap puts it in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, so the code is to hand at the counter, without anyone having to dig out an email.

An amount has been drawn at the counter. The rest stays on the same card with the same code. That is the normal way to use a gift card.

What to know

The card carries your shop, not ours: Your logo, your colour, your header image and your own line under the name. Upload a gallery and the buyer picks the picture on the card from it. The shop, the card and the email all use the same one. Kuvert's name only appears where the sender has to be recognisable.
The balance can be used over several visits: A gift card is a balance, not a coupon. Take DKK 240 off a card of DKK 500 and the last 260 stay on the same card with the same code, and the customer can come back. That is the ordinary way to use a card, not an exception.
An open amount, or a fixed card: An open amount lets the buyer type the figure themselves, within the range you have set. A fixed card is one particular thing at one particular price, such as a menu, a stay or a treatment, and it does not have to stay inside the open amount's ceiling. The two can sit side by side on the same page.
A card you issue yourself costs nothing: If you sell a card across the counter, against an invoice or as an apology for a bad evening, you issue it from the dashboard. No payment goes through us, and there is no service fee, handling fee or Stripe fee on that sale. The card works in exactly the same way at the counter.
Bring your old gift cards with you: If you have sold gift cards in another system, you add them under Import cards as a CSV with code, amount and expiry date. You see how many cards and how many kroner the file comes to before anything is created, and a line that cannot be read is given its line number so it can be corrected.
And every card can be exported again: The whole list of cards can be downloaded as a CSV file with code, balance, expiry and the old code if the card was imported. The cards are yours, including on the day you want to move on.

36 months' validity: Every card is issued with at least 36 months' validity. That is the three years the law assumes when nothing else has been agreed, and Kuvert's fixed minimum. You can make it longer, never shorter, and the date is fixed to the card from the day it was issued.
The remaining balance can be claimed in cash: The customer has the right to have a remaining balance paid out in cash, during the validity period and for a year after it. Before expiry the business may charge a fee that covers the cost, at most DKK 25; after expiry nothing. Kuvert keeps it as its own entry type, so a payout can be told apart from a redemption afterwards, in the accounts too.
A 14-day right of withdrawal on an unused card: A gift card bought online is a distance sale, and the buyer can withdraw from it for 14 days as long as the card is completely unused. Take even one amount off it and the right is spent. Kuvert keeps the withdrawal as its own action, so it does not look like an ordinary refund.
The code can be read out across a counter: A code is two groups of four characters after KUV, and the alphabet holds neither a zero, an O, a one nor an I. It sounds like a detail until somebody has to dictate it over the phone or type it in one-handed at the till.

Scheduled delivery

Bought in good time. Delivered on the day.

People buy gifts before they're needed, and a gift that lands three weeks too early isn't a surprise any more. The buyer picks the day at purchase, and the card is sent automatically that morning with the greeting and who it is to and from.

The card is issued at purchase: The payment goes through, and the card is created straight away. Only the sending waits. The money is in your Stripe account from the day of purchase, not from the delivery day.
The buyer gets the receipt straight away: The receipt goes to the buyer at purchase, so they can see it has gone through, without the recipient learning anything ahead of time.
The card is sent even when you're closed: Sending runs on its own on the chosen day, so nobody has to remember to press send. If a sending fails, the card is marked as not delivered and is tried again, instead of being counted as sent.
Or to the buyer themselves: If the buyer wants to hand the card over in person, they choose to have it sent to themselves. Then it can be printed or passed on whenever it suits.

The payment falls today, and the card is ready. The recipient will not hear anything from you for a month.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a gift card valid?

At least 36 months from the day it is issued. That is the three years the law assumes when nothing else has been agreed, and it is Kuvert's own minimum. You can give a card a longer validity, but never a shorter one.

Can the customer choose the amount themselves?

Yes, if that is what you want. You set a range from DKK 100.00 upwards, and the buyer types the figure within it. If you would rather sell particular things at particular prices, you create those as fixed cards instead, and the two can happily sit on the same page.

Can a gift card be used more than once?

Yes. The card holds a balance, and you take off the amount that has to be paid. The rest stays on the card with the same code, and shortly after, the new balance shows on the customer's card page and on the card the customer has put in their phone's wallet.

What if the recipient has lost the email?

Then you send the card again from the dashboard, to a different address if need be. The balance follows the card, so no new amount is issued, and the old code still works. If the recipient has put the card in their wallet, it is there whatever happened to the email.

Does the recipient have to download an app or create an account?

No. The card is a page the recipient opens from the email, with the code, the balance, the greeting and a button for Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. The recipient does not need to install anything.

Can a gift card be refunded?

The buyer can withdraw from an unused card for 14 days after the purchase, and beyond that you can refund an order yourself if you want to. The money goes back the same way it came in, and Kuvert's service fee and handling fee go back with it. You do not pay for a sale that was rolled back.

How far ahead can the buyer choose the delivery day?

As far ahead as the card is valid. The delivery day cannot fall after the card expires, and if the card has a fixed end date, like a Christmas party card, the day cannot be set later than that. Validity is counted from the day of purchase, not from the delivery day.

When do I get the money with a scheduled delivery?

At purchase. The payment is in your own Stripe account straight away, and from there the money goes to the bank according to your payout schedule. Only the sending to the recipient waits.

Can the delivery day be changed after the card has been bought?

The buyer cannot move the day themselves afterwards. If something needs correcting, such as a date or a wrong email address, you send the card again from the dashboard. The balance follows the card, so no new amount is issued.

Can we bring the gift cards we have already sold?

Yes, if they are in another system. Under Import cards you upload a CSV with code, amount and expiry date, and you see how many cards and how many kroner the file comes to before anything is created. The cards get new Kuvert codes, and the old code comes with them, so you can tell each customer what their card is called now. Paper cards with no system behind them you issue yourself from the dashboard instead.

How do I start selling gift cards?

You create a shop, connect it to Stripe and add your first gift card. Then you have your own page where customers can buy gift cards. You can link to it from your website, Instagram or an email, or show it directly on your website with a button. Creating the shop costs nothing. When you sell, it costs 2 % + VAT in service fee and DKK 5.00 in handling fee per gift card and per ticket.
